**45 hours on my feet. 137 km. 9,213 m of climbing – more than the height of Mount Everest.
3 days in the White Mountains.
Friday brought relentless winds that eventually broke my tent. By Sunday, extreme heat had taken over. My stomach rebelled, I couldn’t eat, and I was exhausted.
I had a choice. I could stop.
But I kept thinking about those, like my friend Elena, who don’t get to choose whether they have to face another difficult day. They simply have to wake up and keep going. Keep fighting.
Honestly, the person who was with me most this weekend was my Mum.
She was the strongest woman I’ve ever known and taught me the power of love.
She had lung cancer and had a lung removed. She recovered. Then she developed a brain tumour. She recovered. Then another.
And still, bless her, she wasn’t ready to give up.
She desperately didn’t want to leave my brother and me alone, and I didn’t want to let her go either.
Eventually, the cancer spread to her bones and there was nothing more she could do.
It took me a long time after she died to allow myself to grieve – to let the pain flow through me and allow all the love she had given me to blossom.
That love gave me the strength to take another step. To climb the mountain one more time.
I can’t stop people from getting cancer or take away their suffering. What I can do is support Orizontas and the incredible work they do to help people living with cancer and their families.
Whenever I hit a low point this weekend, someone seemed to appear. A friend arriving on a mountain. A message on my phone. A meal waiting for me. Someone cheering me on.
I’m incredibly grateful for every person who helped me finish.
To my friends who made the difficult journey into the White Mountains, to everyone who sent messages or simply thought of me along the way, to Anopoli Taverna and Verigakis – Bitsakis Pharmacy – thank you.
And to every single person who donated: you have genuinely made a difference.
I couldn’t have done this alone.
Thank you, from the bottom of my heart.
P.S. It’s not too late to donate**
